Guatemalans are known to be warm and polite. They go out of their way to make sure that everyone is at ease. Poor families often live in homes made of mud, adobe brick or wood. Typically, houses have dirt floors and one main room which is used as the eating, sleeping and living area.
Predominantly Catholic, Guatemalans boast that they have more holidays than any other country. On Christmas families set off firecrackers, eat tamales and drink hot chocolate.
Meals in Guatemala center around corn tortillas. Commonly used as a "wrap" and a utensil to "scoop" other food, they are served with black beans, rice, tamales, and fried bananas.
Many children are unable to attend because their families cannot afford required supplies and uniforms. Only 25% of children are enrolled in secondary school. Only 56% of adults are literate.
