An outgoing, welcoming spirit is pervasive throughout the Dominican Republic. Children are rarely shy. Almost every home in the country has one or more mesadoras (rocking chairs) for people to sit and visit.

Predominantly Catholic, Dominicans celebrate many traditional Catholic holidays. Additionally, the entire country rejoices during Carnaval. This early spring celebration features colorful parades.

Comida --served at midday -- is the Dominican Republic's largest meal and can last up to two hours. Rice and beans are the most frequently. Generally, Dominican food is not spicy. Sancocho is the country's national dish, a rich stew made of vegetables and meat.

Although primary school is compulsory, many children are unable to attend because their families cannot afford required supplies and uniforms. Only 58% of children reach the fifth grade.
